Cheers for the advise on this, I ran into an additional problem about half way through the mysql build, I got the error
error: `my_thread_var' undeclared (first use in this function)
turns out its a newly found bug, luckily there's a patch available here

Check out the resource_hacks plugin:

"resource_hacks is a plugin that extends edge Rails’ new restful routes implementation. While the current opinion of the core team is that we should only use member resources with a numeric id, resource_hacks allows Rails to support arbitrary an arbitrary member path."

Doing this would change the file ownership / permissions, which might have been the cause of the problem...

@Lewis' magnet idea theory good, though.

Incidentally, it was a bit of a shock clicking on a tribble (Palm page) link and arriving here... Took a long (internet) time to realise I was sill in the right place.

zsh is a command line program only, and as such, it has no Springboard icon. Instead, you need to run it on the iPhone's command line. I use Mobile Terminal (available on Cydia), which is a great on-the-phone way of getting a terminal window. You can also get a command line for the iPhone by installing OpenSSH (also on Cydia), then connecting to your iPhone with a terminal program on a computer via ssh.

In the post above, I detail how I set up the @master.passwd@ file so both the @mobile@ and @root@ users on the iPhone default to using zsh instead of bash. You could also just type @zsh@ on the command line to launch it, but it's far more useful when set as the default shell.
