Levitated is a site I keep going back to time and time again, because it contains an endless variety of mesmerizing and entertaining Flash animation. Unlike most of the gaudy Flash toys on the Web, Jared Tarbell’s creations are elegant, at times introspective, and always fascinating to watch. This is more than a collection of “gee whiz” toys; it’s an art gallery containing some serious art.
My personal favorite is the Emotion Fractal, which recursively fills a space with words “describing the human condition”. I could reload the page for hours on end as it generates random bits and bobs of juxtaposed adjectives. It’s a lot like magnetic poetry, only instead of placing the words one at a time, you scoop together the entire set of magnets and throw it at the refrigerator.
Best of all: Jared includes source code for many of his creations, sharing a little of his mastery of Flash with the rest of us.
