Douglas Bowman has a fantastic article on using CSS background images to replace text in Web pages. It’s a clever trick for creating page design that uses custom fonts that most of the Web-browsing public doesn’t have installed on their machines, but still keeps the text accessible for most text-only browsers and screen readers.
