Text-to-speech (TTS) has come a long way since the Speak n Spell. AT&T Labs have a TTS demo online that sounds extremely convincing. Some of the stress on syllables isn’t quite right, but the intonation is pretty much dead on, and it handles English (real English and American), Latin American Spanish, French, and German pronunciation with equal skill.

Now all we need is to get all our computers to sound like Majel Barrett.
